"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matt. 5:3)

Poor here translated into the original greek is Ptochos, which means destitute, bankrupt, helpless, powerless to accomplish, reduced to begging, lacking in everything.

In otherwords, Blessed are the spiritually bankrupt, who have no means to save themselves, and nothing to offer to God. Wow!

Kinda puts a damper on the saying "God helps those who help themselves". More accurately the saying should say God helps those who in no way deserve it.

It's true, amazing isn't it. Read this verse now.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom. 5:8)

While we were yet enemies of God, devoted to sin, Christ died for us. That's unconditional love. We gave him nothing, He gave us everything. "...for theirs is the kingdom of heaven".
