You're probably going to want to break this up into multiple studies. I'd recommend 4 different sessions. And before beginning each one, take all the scriptures for that session within a certain color and write them on a 3x5 card (or paper, etc), do separate cards per color and plan on handing a card to each person or groups of persons so that they may be prepped in advance of what verses they are to read. Written paragraphs here can be read/shared as you come to them.

Jesus and the NT writers affirm Moses, the Law, and the Prophets all testify of Jesus.

  • (John 5:39, 46, Luke 24:27) Jesus said the OT all was testifying of Him.
  • (Acts 10:43) Peter said the OT prophets testify of Him.
  • (Acts 8:35) Philip walked the eunuch through the OT scriptures that spoke of Jesus.
  • (Acts 28:23) Paul spent an entire day walking the Jews through the OT trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
  • (Gal. 3:23-24) The Law was given to be our tutor to lead us to Christ.

OT prophets saw all the signs pointing to Christ, but did not see His day like we now do.

  • (1 Pet. 1:10-11) OT prophets made careful searches and inquiries to discover the very things they were prophesying about in regards to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that followed.
  • (Luke 10:24) Jesus testified of the longing of OT prophets and righteous people to see and hear what we see and hear and did not.
  • (Eph. 3:5-6) The Spirit reveals the things which was not made known to men of previous generations, specifically the inclusion of the Gentiles in Christ.

There is a mystery that involves the inclusion of the Gentiles throughout the OT.

  • (Gen. 17:5, 22:18) God promises to make Abraham the father of a multitude of nations, all nations would be blessed because of His obedience.
  • (Isa. 49:6) Israel was to be a light to the Gentiles as they also brought salvation to the ends of the earth.
  • (Hos. 1:10, 2:23) God foretold that Israel would be His people but names a place apart from Israel where those to whom it was said "You are not my people" it shall now be said to them "Children of the living God." (Paul quotes this in Romans 9).
  • (Deut. 32:21) God actually says He will make the Rebellious Israelites jealous by the inclusion of "a foolish nation" (Paul cites this in Rom. 10).
  • (Joel 2:32) Joel Prophesied the Lord pouring out His Spirit and says in those days all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Peter quotes this in Acts 2).
  • (Rom. 15:9-12) Paul also quotes much of the OT in this same defense. (referencing Psa. 18:49, Deut. 32:43, Psa. 117:1, Isa. 11:10).

Jews and Gentiles become mutually beneficial to each other in God's plan.

  • (Rom. 9:4-5) The benefit of being God's chosen people was promised to the Jews.
  • (Rom. 11:17) Branches of Israel was broken off so that Gentiles through faith could be grafted in.
  • (Heb. 11:39-40) Apart from the Gentiles, Israel would not be made perfect.
  • (Rom. 11:31) Mercy being given to the Gentiles opened the way for mercy to be given to the Jews.

A blinding has been temporarily placed on the Jews so that God's redemptive plan for all could move forward.

  • (Isa. 29:10, Deut. 29:4) God gave Israel a spirit of stupor and eyes and ears to hear not. (Paul references this in Rom. 11).
  • (Rom. 11:25) A partial hardening remains on Israel "until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in".
  • (2 Cor. 3:15-16) To this day, when Moses is read among Jews, a veil remains "over their hearts".
  • (Mat. 13:10-16, 1 Cor. 2:6-8) Jesus spoke in parables specifically to hide understanding from those whom it had not been granted to understand...yet. Why?

As a Gentile right now, being in the age of grace until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in (Rom. 11:25) can be very much like having the teacher's answers edition of the text book which has all the answers in the back, (i.e. the New Testament) whereas Israel only has what we (not they) call the Old Testament. It can also be likened to entering a cleverly designed escape room with the detailed walkthrough on how to escape given to you before you even entered and therefore as you encounter each puzzle you do so without mystery because you started with the solution. Israel right now, besides a remnant (Rom. 11:4), does not have the book with the answers in the back, they do not have the walkthrough as we do. We know Jesus is the answer, we know Jesus is the narrow road, we know Jesus is the power and wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:24), and we know Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). As Gentile Christians that is likely where we started in our faith, knowing the Answer. While the Jews have been combing through the scriptures of God we were frolicking in the fields and tiptoeing through the tulips when Jesus called us. Therefore we started with Jesus, and then expanded our view to the rest of scripture, often taking for granted the answers the Spirit revealed to us freely before we even knew the questions being asked of the rest of the class (1 Cor. 1:26-31, 2:10). The Jews have the rest of scripture, and know the prophecies, the law, and the writings of Moses very well, but are veiled because of unbelief to what, or rather Whom, those scriptures are pointing to (see John 5:39-40, 2 Cor. 3:15-16), which was given to us freely made available to us through their rejection (Mat. 22:1-14).

Therefore let us take a moment to put ourselves in the shoes of the Jewish people and consider a viewpoint that does not start out with the answer key. But before we do that, let's start with a disclaimer.

Scripture warns us to not to lord what was given to us freely over them.

  • (Rom. 11:18) Paul tell us not to be arrogant, for it is Israel who supports us, and not vice-versa.
  • (Rom. 11:20-21) He continues to tell us not to be proud but to fear, for if God did not spare the natural branches neither would He spare us.
  • (1 Cor. 4:7) Paul asks us what we have that we have not received, and if we received it why do we boast as if we did not receive it.

With that established let's put on our Yarmulke's, and consider the following scripture and what conclusions we may come to if we didn't have the Answer already. What conclusions might we draw, what possible fulfillments might you consider? What would life look like if we lived according to those beliefs. This won't be easy because we know the Answer and once you know the Answer, you can't unsee it in scripture, but to be empathetic for their sake, and to rekindle the appreciation for the coming arrival of their, and our Messiah and Savior, whom is about to be born in a manger, let's proceed. The fact is, as Jesus often challenged the Jews, if you remove Him from the equation they have no answer to what their own scriptures say (i.e. Mat. 22:41-46).

There are direct prophecies of Christ, appearances of Christ in the OT, and types of Christ seen throughout and many examples in the OT which reflect what Christ would do later in the NT (i.e. sacrificial system, passover, etc). Moses and Abraham were both types of Christ in their services. Moses mediated between God and God's people, Abraham was willing to offer up his son as a sacrifice (Gen. 22:8). Jesus likened Himself being lifted on the cross to that of the bronze serpent lifted in the desert that brought healing to all who turned to it (Num. 21:4-19, John 3:14-15). It's estimated by some counts that over 300 OT prophecies point to Jesus Christ and were fulfilled by His life on earth. We're going to just pick a few.

OT scripture that the Jews would have a hard time reconciling in their minds since they reject Jesus as Messiah.

  • (Gen. 1:26-28) "Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness" cf John 1:1-3 "All things were made through Him..."
  • (Exo. 33:20 cf Gen. 32:30) "You cannot see My face, for mankind shall not see Me and live!" cf Genesis 32:30 Where Jacob said "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared".
  • (Hos. 11:1 cf Mat. 2:14-15), where out of Egypt the Son is called.
  • (Mic. 5:2 cf Mat. 2:1-2) The Savior born in Bethlehem.
  • (Psa. 16:9 cf Acts 2:31) where Christ's soul was not abandoned to Hades.
  • (Gen. 16:7-14, 22:11-18, Jud. 5:23, 2 Kin. 19:35, Also Gen. 18:1-33 & Dan. 3:25). Christophanies--pre incarnate appearances of the Son of God "The angel of the Lord" vs "An angel of the Lord"
  • (Isa. 7:14, Mat. 1:18), virgin birth foretold and fulfilled.
  • (2 Sam. 7:8-16) God establishing that a descendant of David's lineage will be His Son and God will establish His kingdom and His throne forever.
  • (Psa. 110 cf Mat. 22:41-46) Psalms Describes the Messiah, and because of 2 Sam. 7, they agree with Jesus that the Messiah is the Son of David. But Jesus quotes David in Psalm 110:1 and asks them how can the Messiah be merely a son if David, writing "in the Spirit", calls Him Lord (Messiah)? If David calls Him "Lord" than the Messiah has to be much more than just a son--physical descendant of David. Jesus, knowing the only puzzle piece that would fit in this empty place is Him, is upsetting and debunking the previously held ideals for who they were deducing it must be...and Jesus is using their own scripture to do it!
  • (Isa. 61:1-2a cf Luke 4:17-21) where Jesus is the anointed One who has the Spirit, who can set captives free. He also sent the report of Him doing this to encourage John in Mat. 11:5 when John asked if He was the Expected One.
  • (Isaiah 53, Luke 22:37) Jesus confirmed this indeed was speaking about Him.
  • (Psalm 22:1-18, Mat. 27:46, John 19:23-24, 33) details how He would die and fulfillment.

Did you find it difficult to see these as being anything but pointing to Jesus? If so, thank God for His work in your life and for removing the veil and blessing your eyes (Mat. 16:17). Unfortunately there are many who do not see Jesus as Messiah and unfortunately are trying hard to explain away such prophecies. In fact, many modern day Jews actually have Isaiah 53 ripped out of their bibles. Consider the modern day Jew whom when asked what is a Jew, because he rejects the works of the Spirit (Rom. 2:28-29), struggled greatly to answer this question.

Researching reasons as to why Jews reject Jesus as Messiah I found these to be pretty common reasons.

  • They fear other Jews.
  • They reject Jesus because the majority of them reject Jesus.
  • They reject the trinity and believe worshiping Jesus violates the command of God to not worship anything but Him (Exo. 20:3-5).
  • They believe the Messiah won't be divine, but another mere man in the lineage of David.
  • If God is Father, they can't fathom how someone can also be from the tribe of Judah, therefore born of flesh (which the virgin birth answers this).
  • They believe Jesus teaches people to not worry about the Law and lead people away from the Torah and therefore violates the law which says not to take away from the commandments (Deut. 13:1).
  • They believe the Messiah was to usher in world peace, and they look at the world as it is, and conclude that Jesus then must not be him.
  • They believe one cannot pay for the sins of another (often in error citing Eze. 18:20, Deut. 24:16).
  • They feel Jesus failed to destroy evil and all their enemies and establish an eternal kingdom with Israel.
  • They equate all Gentiles as "Christian" and feel the crusades, inquisition, pogroms, and holocaust were all done to them at the hands of "Christians".

When all scripture leads to Jesus, but that's the narrow road you're unwilling to consider, scripture, and life itself becomes very perplexing. Perhaps considering their perspective and what they have to work with these reasons are understandable though errant. The fact is, Jesus is the mystery of the OT, He's the puzzle piece everything Moses, the Law, and Prophets was pointing too and when one takes a proper look at the things written in them they can deduce all these things point to Jesus. Even in the book of proverbs, a book to impart wisdom, yet the writer of Proverbs 30:4 in all his deducing and narrowing down was able to figure out the type that was to come but didn't know who He was and you can hear the longing to in His writings.

Who has ascended to heaven and come down?
Who has gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son's name?
Surely you know! - Proverbs 30:4

(1 Pet. 1:12) Even the angels themselves longed to look at what the prophets had been preaching this whole time. Can you imagine all that provoked such a longing? Therefore let us not so flippantly consider so great of knowledge that was handed to us freely and easily. Let us look anew at the account of the birth of Jesus and as you read, appreciate that this is the summation of the OT and the beginning of the Lord's humble entry into this world, something even the angels came all the way down to earth to witness.

And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. - Luke 2:6-20

There is more joy in heaven over one that repents than ninety-nine persons who need no repentance (Luke 15:7). Likewise it says there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10). Perhaps nobody knew better than the angels that our redemption would only be made possible by Jesus, after all, they knew His name beforehand and decreed it to Joseph and Mary saying, "You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins" (Mat. 1:21). Acts 4:12 states "and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved". Given the angels heart felt invested interest, I find it no surprise that they followed to see this miracle amazing event happen, and when they witnessed it they exhuberantly exclaim two things, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!" (KJV) thereafter returning back to heaven.

All that glory came down to us, that He may bring us back up to share in all that glory. Can there be a better gift? Can there be a larger contract between what we deserve and what we get? So consider what Christ has done and truly have a Merry Christmas! Perhaps this song will have new meaning to you, it sure did to me.
